Menguasai bahasa Inggris di tingkat SMP memang butuh latihan yang konsisten, terutama saat membahas materi dasar seperti there is dan there are. Dua frasa ini sering muncul dalam percakapan sehari-hari, mulai dari mendeskripsikan isi kamar, ruang kelas, sampai lingkungan sekitar rumah. Sayangnya, masih banyak siswa kelas 7 yang tertukar antara keduanya. Padahal, aturannya cukup sederhana: there is untuk benda tunggal, there are untuk benda jamak.

Tips Mengerjakan dengan Cepat
Satu hal yang perlu diingat: lihat kata benda setelah there. Kalau benda itu tunggal (satu), pakai there is. Kalau benda itu jamak (lebih dari satu), pakai there are. Untuk benda yang tidak bisa dihitung seperti water, milk, atau sugar, tetap pakai there is karena dianggap satu kesatuan.
Kalau ada dua benda digabung dalam satu kalimat, misalnya a pencil and two erasers, patokan yang dipakai adalah benda pertama. Karena a pencil tunggal, maka there is yang benar. Pola ini sering keluar di ulangan harian, jadi jangan sampai terlewat.
Latihan rutin selama 15 sampai 20 menit setiap hari jauh lebih efektif daripada belajar semalam suntuk. Coba kerjakan soal di atas tanpa melihat kunci jawaban dulu, lalu koreksi bersama teman atau orang tua. Dengan begitu, materi there is dan there are bakal menempel kuat di ingatan dan siap dipakai kapan saja.
